This is why I love the world of DIY blogging.
There is such a great network of people to learn from! When I was researching how to go about painting my table, I had so many options to choose from. I wanted something tried and true, so I went with the advice of Kate from Centsational Girl. If you’ve ever tried a DIY project, you know a lot of it is trial and error. It isn’t good to rush a project and I find that if you are doing a furniture makeover, especially involving spray paint, it is best to do it in a garage with the door open and the conditions have to be right. Not too humid, not too windy, and not too hot! Our Mid-west heat wave put the kibosh on my table makeover. Now temperatures are more favorable so I went to work.
I went outside my box of white, black, and gray furniture and decided to add a colorful piece of accent furniture to our living room.

This is how I did it:
The Supply List
Rustoleum Painter’s Touch Primer
Fine Grit Sanding Wedge
Lint free Cloths
2 cans of Rustoleum Painter’s Touch Paint in Navy Blue in Gloss
2 sponge brushes
Minwax water-based Polycrylic Clear Coat in Gloss
Step 1–Prime it!
Before I applied the primer, I removed the doors and all hardware. Then I cleaned the surfaces of the table and dusted it with a lint free cloth.
This primer covered really well, and I only had to do one coat. It took the whole can to prime this project, doors included.
Step 2:After the primer dries sand off any imperfections.
- There wasn’t much to sand for this, just a little imperfection on the side. Then I wiped it down with a lint free cloth.
3. Paint it!
I used two light coats, and held the can about 12 inches from the surface. Make sure you use a back and forth motion and be even, especially with a dark color. This covered so well, that I could of gotten away with one coat.
Caution! WET PAINT!
4. Protect It! I let this dry for 24 hrs. before applying the top coat.
This is water based and cleans up easy with soap and water. It can be applied over fully dry oil-based or water-based paints and stains. I went for the super glossy look!
I waited a full 24 hours before applying it to the table. I applied a 2nd coat to the doors and top since they will probably get the most wear. I also let it dry a full 24 hours before I used it.
The Result:
This turned out so well I had to play with it in my living room. It might just live there now!

Remember that urn from my Goodwill trip on Tuesday? Well, he got a nice coat of white lacquer spray paint. The other items I had laying around the house.
I am so excited to paint that wall in the living room now! Oh, how lovely navy can be!
After the kids went to bed, I played a little. I even like the color at night by lamp light! I had some fun playing with different looks…I’m feeling a preppy vibe these days.
