Our living room in the Illinois house was one of our most favorite places to spend time in our home. The room was long and narrow with a big brick and stone fireplace that divided the foyer from the room. It has a wall of huge picture windows, gleaming hardwoods, and the original plaster crown mouldings. We installed a library wall with library lights, gave the fireplace a facelift with a custom mantel and Carrara subway tile, and installed new baseboards and wall moulding. The lighting is inspired by the iconic Serge Mouille arm fixtures and the room is a modern mix of all the things we love in furniture and decor. We mixed traditional, mid century modern, hollywood regency, antiques, and new furnishings to create a very layered and lovely space. It is a great example of how to mix old and new. We acheived layered texture with the zebra cowhide rug, sheep skin throws, leather on chairs, the vintage Howard Parlor upholstery, and velvet blush and animal print pillows. The large scale art is one of my paintings that I made specifically for this space.
