July left quicker than it arrived! I feel like the countdown to school has now begun. A little clock is ticking in my head and reminding me of everything I must do before the kids go back to school. I just got done signing the boys up for fall sports and making physical appointments. Pretty soon we’ll be buying pencils and new school clothes. It’s like August is just a reminder that September is almost here. I really want to enjoy our last month of summer though.
Well, enough of that rambling…
This week will be a little different, since I will be leaving for Haven Wednesday. I won’t be posting as much, but I may pop in here and there!
Let’s recap the month, shall we? If you missed something or want to revisit something here are the links.
I just loved the DIY’s I got done around here this month. This Inspired Design Challenge has really sparked some creativity! Inside the house, our foyer has been getting a facelift and you can see how we made our own DIY chandelier with a shade by using the existing ceiling fixture. I also spruced up some old photo frames with this snake skin duct tape DIY.
Outdoors we have been working on our patio and I showed how you can DIY your way through a beautiful summer dinner party. I also gave a Goodwill find an updated look by making a birdcage into a candle holder to use outside.
Our latest DIY was a family affair. The boys helped me paint our latest masterpiece a DIY version of the West Elm Black + White Abstract Art. We made our own canvas and did it all for under $15.
Around the House.
July was a month of organizing, bargains, and tackling those little projects around the house. I shared my new favorite source for beautiful outdoor pillows on Etsy. I banished more oak woodwork and painted our coat closet door and installed a thrifted swing arm wall lamp in our living room. Our foyer makeover is coming along and I found the perfect jute rug at World Market on a surprise shopping trip. I am so happy to be bringing some color into our master bedroom with a few new items from Target. At last, we have a great storage solution for our summer pool toys using the new Rubbermaid All Access Organizers.
I have been having such a great time being a part of the Inspired Design Challenge! We are now working on our projects for Week 4 and will be revealing them on Monday. Week 4 is Anthropologie so you know it’s going to be good!
I also want to thank Brittany of Brittany Makes for having me blog crash and be part of her Summer VIP Guest Blog Series.
Brittany is one of my fave DIY’ers and I just love her style. You must check out her Project Gallery. One of my favorites is her Craigslist Dresser Makeover.
I will be leaving for the Haven Conference tomorrow! Excited doesn’t sum it up…there isn’t a word for it. I am going to try to blog a bit while we are gone, but I can’t make any promises. I may be MIA until Aug. 5th. We’ll see how it goes.
Today, I am happy to share how I set up my outdoor table for a summer dinner party. I used items from the new David Tutera Casual Elegance collection now available exclusively at Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores to create the perfect backyard table. This collection is merchandised under bridal, but can be used for so many other things! It’s a bit rustic with burlap, has a timeless charm with lace accents, but plays current and modern. For weddings there are votive wrappings, bouquet wraps, table cards and so much more. It has a vintage feel but you can customize each piece to suit your tastes. It is so versatile. I can see it used at a bridal shower, a baby shower, a birthday party, or as seen here a summer dinner party.
I just love to have friends over in the summer. Beautiful weather is a great excuse to throw a party, don’t you agree?
Here’s what I used to create my beautiful summer tablescape:
• a burlap table runner
• craft paint + paint sponges
• mason jars + votives
• David Tutera Chalkboard Stakes
• David Tutera Hemp Cord + David Tutera Paper Lanterns
• David Tutera Burlap Ribbon + Burlap Flowers
• David Tutera Metal Buckets + David Tutera Paper Straws
* You will want scissors, masking tape or painter’s tape, and fabric glue on hand also.
My white tablecloth was a little boring, so I opted to add in some color with a painted burlap table runner. I love pinks and oranges for summer this year, so I painted stripes on a plain burlap table runner that you can pick up at any craft store.
Prep your workspace. Since paint will bleed through burlap, you want to cover your surface first. I just used old newspapers and taped my runner in place. I also ironed it on a low setting to get all the fold lines out before I started.
Now’s time to paint! I taped off my stripes with masking tape and used a sponge to blot my paint onto the burlap. I peeled the tape off right away for clean lines.
Now it’s time to dress the table. I used mason jars of all different sizes to hold my flowers and votives.
I wrapped the jars in the David Tutera burlap ribbon and it is attached with just a little dab of fabric glue. I wove the David Tutera burlap flowers in the ribbon and placed a few in my floral arrangement as fillers.
For the table settings, I just kept it simple and potted some succulents from my garden in the David Tutera metal buckets. For place cards, I used the David Tutera small chalkboard stakes in each pot.
For added fun, I added the paper straws to the water glasses. I love striped paper straws, don’t you?
Next to the table I set up a little serving station. Here everyone can grab utensils and drinks. I wanted a keep it casual and not too structured. I used the David Tutera Paper lanterns here. They provide a nice backdrop and a little extra light when the sun goes down. These painted branches are a fun way to hang the lanterns when you don’t have trees or a covered patio. I used the David Tutera Hemp Cord to hang them.
Our boring table is now a beautiful place to entertain our friends for a little summer fun! Here’s some shots we took before our guests came over. Enjoy!
You can catch the latest from the David Tutera Casual Elegance line on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, and PINTEREST.

Let me just start this saying I LOVE ETSY! Sometimes I tire of seeing the same old prints and offerings at stores. I love my home stores, but I don’t want to have the same couch cushions as my neighbor. Inevitably, that happens from time to time when everyone I know shops at the same 5 stores. That is where Etsy is such a breath of fresh air!
When I was sourcing cushions for our patio makeover, I knew I’d find some great outdoor pillows on Etsy. I have been loving the pinks and oranges I have been seeing lately. That combo just says summer to me. Then, I found Cathy’s Custom Pillows.
Cathy makes everything from pillows to curtains to table runners. She has an excellent variety of fabric to choose from and that goes for the outdoor fabrics too! Her prices are good and you can contact her for special orders.
Here’s some of the outdoor offerings that I just love:
Preppy Pink Birds Greek Key Pillow
Outdoor Curtain Panels with Grommets in Deep Navy Blue
Cathy’s Custom Pillows has so many more options, colors, and patterns. I encourage you to check out her etsy shop. You can check out all her outdoor options here.
Cathy was so sweet to send me a Preppy Pink Birds Greek Key pillow to share with you for our patio makeover.
Now, the trick to this photo taking is to show you her beautiful pillow and not reveal our patio! Tricky, tricky! We aren’t done with all the pimping yet and I don’t want to spoil it before we are ready.
The fabric is gorgeous. I love the color and it is made so well! This is the 20 inch square size and it comes with the pillow insert too. This is a really good size for higher backed patio furniture like ours. Cathy offers a variety of shapes and sizes for pillows to fit your needs.
When you shop on etsy.com you are supporting small business and I just love that! If you are looking for custom pillows, curtains, or table linens I highly recommend checking our Cathy’s Custom Pillows. Cathy was so great to work with. She has a great selection of modern, high quality fabrics and offers them at affordable prices. You can’t beat that!

Howdy! So, I got great news!! God said, “Let there be light” and praise Jesus the lights are coming!! (That was overly dramatic, sorry about that– I’m just giddy with anticipation!) My lights are arriving Friday, which means, that next week I will reveal the library wall!! We should be able to install them this weekend.
So, while we wait, I wanted to show you what our next Let’s Rock This House! project is–PIMP MY PATIO. Here is the space that we will be working with. Our backyard is small. We are all front yard and side yard on a corner lot, so there’s not much junk in the trunk here. But, what we don’t have in size we make up for in appeal. We have two streams that run into a water garden and lots of landscaping!
This first photo is of the patio area that we will be working with. It’s pretty private since it is cut into the hillside.
You can see that there are a couple of things to address right away. Our home’s foundation where you can see where the hill used to be. We need to coat and paint that. I’ve got some plans for that wall…It’s not a huge patio space either, so we are going to try to get as much going on there as we can. We did have a table and 4 chairs there, but they are 10 years old and not looking too hot these days. We also want to create more of a lounge-y feel. That’s more our entertaining speed.
I love that we are right next to the little stream and pond. I also love the steps and two tiered gardens above. What I don’t love is the way the sunlight hits at different times of the day. We may need to add some shade control.
This photo shows how the patio goes right up to the pond. There is a landing behind the pond where those chairs are that would make another conversation space.
From the patio looking down the other side of the house you can see the second stream and steps leading up the hillside. Yes, that’s our old table with a giant crack in the top. That’s going to go soon. This other area is pretty tight, so I am thinking of just doing a little table and two chairs. Not quite sure yet on the details.
Our main focus will be this first patio space.
There’s the before shots. It’s been pretty rainy round these parts as you can see. I am loving the plans we have for this space!! Remember, you can follow all the behind the scenes action on Instagram hashtag #rockthishouse #pimpmypatio
It’s going to be a double post Thursday. I have a little DIY chalkboard project to reveal later on.

Hey guys! I’m waiting. Patiently waiting. WAAA-IIII-TINNNNG! Waiting on lights. I would love to be revealing a beautiful library wall to you this week, but I need my lights. Then, I need to install my lights. Then, I need to take some beautiful pictures and break down our efforts and show you the surprises. So, until that day comes (hopefully soon!) my mind is on the next Let’s Rock This House! project– PIMP MY PATIO.
Dave and I have been plotting it out. We’ve come up with the game plan. We have sourced and purchased a lot of the items. We have some DIYing to do. I am super excited! It involves fire, glass, stencils, spray paint, plants, projects, lighting, lions, tigers and bears–OH, MY! Well, maybe not the last three.
I’ve been getting inspiration from where else?? Some of my favorite design bloggers, of course! So, today I’d like to share some of the patio images I’ve found truly inspiring as we head into the warmer months.

Because It’s Awesome
Aren’t those some gorgeous outdoor rooms?! I could hang out at any of those and feel right at home. Home Depot did a great job selecting the design bloggers for the patio challenge. Most of those images above are from the Home Depot Patio Challenge. I am so pumped that the weather is finally feeling like summer and we can start making a fun and lounge-y outdoor hangout!
Howdy, awesome people! This week, I tell ya! It was a little off for me. I was coming off a Spring Break high and ditched my usual tendencies to stick to a schedule. Schedules are comforting to me and help me collect my thoughts and ideas so I am already set to get back at it. Thanks for hanging in there as I just posted my every whim this week.
How’s your weekend shaping up? We are having 60 degree weather so hopefully I will get some much-needed outdoor work done if it doesn’t rain cats and dogs like they are predicting.
Here’s the weekly recap:
Monday I featured Frette. It’s a wonderful company that specializes in bedding and linens for your home. You can check out their full line of bedding, linens, bathrobes, and home accessories here.
THIS IS WHY I THRIFT.
Tuesday I did a little throwback post on one of my thrifty finds and what it’s going for on one of my favorite online shops. If you like a good thrift store makeover come check out my arrow table.
GET IN MY HOUSE.
Wednesday I expressed my continual love for Zgallerie, especially now that they are offering so many great home accessories in gold!
THE GREAT OUTDOORS.
Thursday I shared our backyard water garden and patio. I am hoping that the temperatures will stay warm enough so we can start getting our green thumb on once again.
Our bedroom makeover is featured over at She Knows. How cool is that?! A big thank you to She Knows for the article. That made my week!
Fingers-crossed…outdoor yard work. We are also going to be doing some finishing work in the kitchen. We have a couple more baseboards to install and some trim work to finish. I will be taking some beauty photos of my desk makeover so I can share the process and the finished product with you on Monday.
So there I am editing photos…excuse the ugly over-sized Grandpa sweater. I was cold! This photo brought to you courtesy of my 9 year old. I also am not camera ready as they say, but this is how I look most of the time when I’m in work mode. You can see a tiny tease of the desk, but I’m saving the goodies for Monday! Let’s just say for now, I love it and it’s working out great.
Enjoy your weekend, see you Monday!!

Did I hear that right? In the 60′s this weekend?? Oh, weatherman do not tease me!
There is a good chance I will be an outdoors kind of girl this weekend. I am so excited to get working in the yard again. I am so excited to be relaxing in the yard again after working in the yard all day.
We have this awesome water feature and patio area in our backyard:
It’s the perfect backdrop for family photos…
And a great place to enjoy a meal and a glass of wine…
It’s been a few years and it needs some tweaking. Our outdoor furniture is getting old and is showing some wear and tear and I think I want to make more of a “lounge feel” in our patio space and have the table in a different spot…
Come on Spring! I want to get started!!
Are you busy getting your outdoor space set up for spring?
