THE PROJECTS & THINGS HAPPENING AT THE #BHVINTAGECOLONIAL
It’s time for another Around the House update here from Connecticut. It’s been a productive week on our new projects.
As for today…not so productive, ha! I’m enjoying another snow day at home with the kids. I’m simmering some chili on the stove and I decided to put off the paint pick-up until the weekend.
Spring keeps teasing us with warm weather, but I think Winter is having her last laugh. More snow is falling today and it looks like we are bracing for another Nor’Easter early next week. The boys had that AM excitement of school being cancelled. Glad we like the snow! Truth be told, I am ready for warmer weather for a number of reasons, but I’m trying to enjoy these last snow days. It is quite pretty outside our windows.
I’ve been sharing the battle of the rug on Instagram stories. It’s so funny. Dave and I aren’t the types to quibble over decorative details. We’ve had quite the nice system until the rug.
Usually, I am the decision maker and he is the brawn when it comes to wielding the tools and such. It’s a nice arrangement. He likes what I do with our home, so he’s never put his foot down… until now.
At least, we are light-hearted about it. I love designing and decorating, but it is not that important in the grand scheme of things. I’m willing to compromise with my favorite person on a silly rug battle.
This rug is AN OUTDOOR RUG…
I recently selected it for our sun porch that we are going to paint soon. It arrived really fast! I unrolled it in the living room to help flatten it out since it was going to be a little bit before the weather gives a break to open the windows and paint.
Well, Dave loves it in the living room! I’ve never heard him go on about anything home related like this. He really wants it to stay there.
Do you go through this with your partner? This is new for us.
Goodness! It does look good in there, I have to admit.
For an outdoor rug, it has a really nice soft weave with a little plushness. Not what I was envisioning for the room, but I feel like I should compromise and keep it inside. He has a really good argument about how the clean-up is better with this type of rug. Kids spilling, little dog tracking in dirt, sand from the beach–YES, alright!
So, I am back to the hunt for the sun room rug. If this is the most of our battles right now, I consider us pretty darn lucky!
Anyways, it’s a great rug indoors or out. I’m okay with the change now.
So, he wins 😉
A perk of living here is definitely the shopping. Everything is SO CLOSE! Back where we lived in Illinois, if I wanted to see things in person that would require a trip to Des Moines, IA or Chicago. There weren’t too many shops worth the outing. Here, every store is a short trip and I’ve found some consignment gems already.
Also, I am enjoying having a Homegoods so close. We had TJ Maxx back in the Quad-Cities, but it was always picked through in the home section and most things looked damaged. My recent trip to Homegoods was great since I was looking for rugs and objects. I found a few things to add to my collection of curiosities this week. They fit in with the plans we have for the makeover so I snagged the bargains.
A marble obelisk and shell obelisk to mix with my crystal ones…aren’t they perfectly sized for this mix?!
And I found a good horn sculpture with a marble base…I wish they would have had two! Maybe I’ll see another one out and about. The variations are beautiful on this one though.
I have always loved the traditional and timeless objects and curiosities. They add another layer of polish and luxury to a space. We edited a lot of decor and objects before we moved, so I am being very careful with what I select going into this home. I want collections and beauty, but a good sense of refinement. Nothing too overdone and I am trying to ignore what others are doing and the latest trends. Not an easy feat with the numerous sources of inspiration in my face every day. I’m reminding myself to just focus on the things I’ve always gravitated towards. Stick to the design plan–ignore the whims.
The living room design is finally decided upon and everything is a go! The entry way and living room makeover I have been working on at the same time because these spaces are connected. You can see my entry way plans HERE if you want a look at what we are doing.
So, the only thing I am waiting on for the project part is the weather. We are painting walls, going to install grasscloth, and add custom wall mouldings. I just need the temperatures to cooperate! Hopefully, after this next week, we will get a break and I can crack those windows open and paint. Come on spring!
Things are ordered and custom pieces are being made right now. It’s exciting to get the ball rolling on this home! My next post I’ll be sharing our design plan for the living room…until then it’s top secret…okay, not really…but I’m not sharing it today.
*from 2 weeks ago…deciding on fabrics, wall coverings, and colors…
I am in love with the plans and we were able to use some things from our old home and mix them in with the new things we are adding in. Can’t wait to share it with you guys!
It’s SPRING HOME TOUR season! I have barely shared much of our new home with you guys, so I decided to do a little more sharing with this upcoming home tour. My blogging friend, Marty from A Stroll Thru Life, always puts on a great blog hop tour and I am thrilled to join in on it again. She gets quite the mix of styles and budgets, so there is something for everyone.
I’ve been slowly putting some rooms together and shooting our spaces. Mark your calendars for the week of March 20th.
I just shot the formal living room this week…Honestly, I don’t think it’s that bad considering I haven’t even gotten to paint or hang art yet or have curtains or proper lighting at night.
It’s a little odd that I’m shooting a spring tour with snow outside my windows and zero window coverings on our main floor. March 20th is ‘the first day of spring’ according to the calendar anyways!
In our next post, I’ll share our living room design board and the key things we are going to change in that room.
